Seeds of Excellence: Models for a National Prefab Innovation Network

When we propose a national network of Centres of Excellence for Prefab Innovation, we are not describing a theoretical concept. Functional models already exist in Canada, proving the viability and impact of this approach. A prime example is the Maritime Advanced Manufacturing Centre of Excellence (MAMCE) at the University of New Brunswick. While not exclusively focused on construction, MAMCE's mandate is a blueprint for what we envision. It acts as a collaborative hub that:

• Bridges academia and industry to solve real-world manufacturing challenges.

• Offers training and technology demonstration for a modern workforce.

• Provides applied research and development facilities.

This is precisely the model needed for the construction sector. Prefab-focused Centres of Excellence would:

• Test & Certify New Materials: Rigorously assess bio-based insulations (e.g., wool), mass timber assemblies, and low-carbon concrete for inclusion in building codes.

• Develop Digital Standards: Create and maintain open-source BIM libraries and digital protocols for seamless design-to-fabrication workflows.

• Train the Workforce: Offer hands-on certification in DfMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly), robotics, and advanced prefab assembly techniques.

The existence of MAMCE demonstrates that the collaborative infrastructure can be built. The next step is to specifically channel this model toward the urgent national priority of housing, creating a coordinated network where centres in BC, the Prairies, Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada each specialize in regional climate and market needs.
